— U.S. Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y. 7), 72, has announced her retirement from Congress at the end of her current term, her 16th. She cited the generational change taking place amongst Democrats in elected office during the current election cycle. When she was first elected to Congress, in 1992, she was the first Puerto Rican woman to serve. It's expected that her office vacancy will attract many candidates in next year's June Democratic Party primary.
