Early Christmas holiday shopping data shows inflation explains some of the increase in sales volume

Even as new Trump administration tariffs impact importers, consumers are paying higher prices because of the import levies. That, and lingering inflation, may be translating into higher sales volumes. However, the sales increases do not necessarily reflect economic expansion, since sales of unit goods may not be rising. Ultimately, a portion of the sales increases attributable to tariffs will be collected by the Government and will not remain in the private sector of the U.S. economy.
