President Donald J. Trump (R) likes to sound tough-on-crime in the war on drugs. But some of his actions contradict his tough-talk. On one hand, he wants severe penalties on Nations allegedly harbouring cartels, and he wants to deport migrants seeking asylum if they are charged with drug- or gang-related crimes. On the other, he pardons political élites convicted of drug trafficking. As a result, his bombing campaign of alleged Venezuelan drug boats raises accusations of duplicity.
