The aftermath of the longest U.S. Government shutdown, through the lens of domestic Editorial Boards

Editorials by U.S. media reflect the hardships experienced by Americans living in poverty, and the politics in Washington over healthcare. In praising the 8 break-away U.S. Senators, who sided with Republicans, to end the shutdown, the Editorial Board of the Washington Post denounced the fake outrage over healthcare subsidies as the economy took a nose-dive, notably, the commercial airline industry. If there was political blame, it lay with the party leaders.

Greg Casar (D-Texas), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, deemed it “capitulation.” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) described it as “pathetic.” But a deal like this could not happen without the minority leader’s tacit support. Yet, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) voted against reöpening the government.
